Navigating Making Tax Digital

The UK tax system is undergoing its biggest transformation in a generation. Under HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, traditional year-end Self Assessment returns are being replaced by real-time digital record-keeping and quarterly reporting.

At Garner & Associates, we make compliance effortless. Whether you are a sole trader, landlord, or business owner, our expert team ensures your transition to MTD is seamless, stress-free, and fully compliant with HMRC regulations.

Do You Need to Register for MTD for Income Tax?

MTD for Income Tax applies to self-employed individuals and landlords registered for Self Assessment based on their gross qualifying income (total combined turnover from self-employment and gross property income, before expenses):

  • From 6 April 2026: Mandatory for sole traders and landlords with a qualifying income over £50,000.

  • From 6 April 2027: Mandatory for those with a qualifying income over £30,000.

Note: HMRC will automatically begin enrolling non-compliant businesses that meet the income threshold based on historical Self Assessment data. Partnering with Garner & Associates ensures your records are set up correctly before mandatory enrolment takes effect.

What Does MTD for Income Tax Require You to Do?

Under MTD regulations, manual spreadsheets (without digital links) and paper receipts are no longer sufficient on their own. You or your appointed agent must:

  1. Keep Digital Records: Store income and expense details in HMRC-compatible digital software.

  2. Submit Quarterly Updates: Send digital summaries of your income and expenses to HMRC every three months.

  3. Submit a Final Declaration: Complete a year-end finalisation (replacing the traditional tax return) by 31 January following the tax year, confirming final adjustments, reliefs, and allowances.

How Garner & Associates Helps You Stay Compliant

Transitioning to new software and quarterly deadlines can feel overwhelming. Garner & Associates provides a complete end-to-end MTD management service so you can focus on running your business or managing your properties.

1. Software Setup & Integration

We review your current processes and help you select and configure HMRC-compatible accounting software (such as Xero, QuickBooks, or Dext). We ensure your bank feeds and digital records are configured correctly from day one.

2. Quarterly Update Submissions

Instead of scrambling at the end of the tax year, we compile, review, and submit your quarterly reports to HMRC accurately and on time, protecting you from late-submission penalty points.

3. Tax Planning & Final Declaration

Quarterly reporting gives us continuous sight of your performance. We use this real-time data to offer proactive tax planning throughout the year before preparing and submitting your Final Declaration by 31 January.

4. HMRC Agent Authorisation

As your authorised HMRC agent, Garner & Associates can communicate directly with HMRC on your behalf, handle queries, and keep your tax profile fully updated.

MTD Late Submission & Payment Penalty Protection

HMRC has introduced a new points-based penalty system for late quarterly submissions and late payments under MTD.

  • Missing quarterly deadlines incurs penalty points; once a threshold is reached, automated financial penalties apply.

  • Late payment interest applies automatically on outstanding balances.

When Garner & Associates manages your MTD filings, we monitor all reporting schedules to ensure deadlines are never missed.
